From Ocean Grove to 100,000 families: the story of Vanilla Mozi

The story of Vanilla Mozi begins the way most important things do: with a mother who would not accept the options available to her.

Lea-Anne Crawford is a person of precision. She thinks carefully about what goes into her family's bodies, what they eat, and — critically — what is applied to her children's skin. For parents of young children who share this approach, the outdoor protection category has, for most of its history, presented a deeply unsatisfying set of options.

The conventional products work through pesticide chemistry. They are registered as pesticides because they are pesticides. Lea-Anne refused them. But the alternatives available in the early 2000s were no more satisfying — botanical products that smelled sharp and clinical, or that used citronella and lemongrass as their active ingredients, which is to say, botanical pesticides. A different chemistry. The same fundamental mechanism. Not the answer she was looking for.

And so, in the way of people who are trained to think about problems scientifically and are unwilling to settle for an inadequate solution, she started asking a different question.

The question nobody had answered

The conventional approach to outdoor protection — the entire category, synthetic and natural — had spent decades working on the problem from one direction: how do we drive away nature's uninvited guests?

Lea-Anne's question was different. Why do they find us in the first place?

Drawing on her background — a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement, combined with years of interest in botanical chemistry and natural wellness — she began researching the host-seeking behaviour of nature's uninvited guests. What she found led her to the science of biomimicry: the principle of working with nature's own mechanisms rather than against them.

Nature's uninvited guests, she learned, do not navigate by sight. They navigate by scent. Specifically, they detect the carboxylic acids in human sweat — the chemical compounds that signal a warm-blooded host is present. These acids are produced by every human body as a byproduct of normal metabolic function. They are volatile, dispersing into the air and creating a detectable trail.

The insight that followed was the one that changed everything: if carboxylic acid detection is how they find you, then the question is not how to drive them away after they've found you. It is how to neutralise the signal before detection occurs.

The Proprietary Blend

Lea-Anne's research led her to specific botanical chemistry — and to the discovery that the right combination of pure vanilla and spearmint essential oils, in the right concentration, interacts with carboxylic acids at a molecular level in a way that neutralises their detectability.

The blend does not create an aversive scent. It does not drive nature away. It transforms the human scent signature so that the detection mechanism of nature's uninvited guests finds nothing. No host signal. No orientation. You simply disappear.

She called it the Vanilla Mozi Proprietary Blend.

The name was inseparable from the discovery. The vanilla in Vanilla Mozi is not a flavour choice or a branding decision. It is the active ingredient. “Vanilla” and “Mozi” — a family term for mosquitoes — together describe precisely what the product is and what it does. The name is the science.

Ocean Grove, 2005

Lea-Anne spent years testing, refining, and re-formulating. The testing was real — conducted on herself, her family, and the people she trusted most to give honest feedback on whether it worked. She was not looking for a laboratory result. She was looking for a product that worked reliably in the messy reality of family outdoor life: summer evenings, camping trips, school holidays, gardens.

The formulation was refined over months, then years. The concentration of the Proprietary Blend was calibrated. The base — the organic shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil and botanical oils and butters that carry the blend and deliver the moisturising experience — was developed with the same care. The standard she was formulating to was clear: if it was not good enough for a baby's face, it was not good enough.

The first sale was local, in Ocean Grove, Victoria. The first customers were parents she knew. The growth was organic, unforced, and powered entirely by people telling other people. A product safe for babies' faces is a product that converts every parent who holds it. A product that smells like sweet vanilla and fresh spearmint — completely unlike every other product in the category — is a product that those parents talk about. These two things together drove twenty years of quiet, community-level growth.

Two decades of refinement

What Lea-Anne built in 2005 has been thoughtfully developed over twenty years. The science has been refined. The formula has been improved. The range has expanded — from the original outdoor body cream to candles and wax melts that extend the same biomimicry science into outdoor spaces, and to a natural skincare range of face oils, balms and soaps, handmade in small batches in Noosa, Queensland.

The credentials have accumulated: B Corp certified. Certified Australian Made. PETA-certified cruelty-free (Beauty Without Bunnies). Vegan certified. ISO 22716 GMP certified manufacture. Winner of the Most Innovative Body Product award at the Global Health & Wellness Awards. A preservation system certified by ECOCERT Greenlife to the COSMOS standard.

In 2022, Lea-Anne's long-time friend Krista Fergusson joined as Partner and Manager, bringing nearly thirty years of experience in the film and television industry and the operational expertise to scale what Lea-Anne had built. Krista's husband Charlie Fergusson joined as Creative Director. The brand is now headquartered in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast, Queensland, while Lea-Anne continues to handcraft the skincare range in Noosa.

Over 100,000 families

There is a number that matters more to us than any award or certification: over 100,000 Australian families have trusted Vanilla Mozi. Many of them have been using it for years. Many of them have introduced it to other families the way Lea-Anne's first customers did — not as a product recommendation, but as a genuine discovery.

The children Lea-Anne formulated this for are grown now. She has recently welcomed her first grandchild. The product she spent years perfecting for her own family is now trusted by the next generation too.

What she built was something genuinely new. Australia's original pesticide-free outdoor body cream. A category that did not exist before she created it. A product that answers the question nobody else had thought to ask.

Born from nature. Backed by science. Made with love.
