Two Aussie mums. One extraordinary idea.

The real story behind Australia's original pesticide-free outdoor body cream.

Before Vanilla Mozi, this didn't exist.

Vanilla Mozi began with a question nobody else was asking: why does outdoor protection have to come at the cost of your health, your skin, or your senses? The answer, it turned out, was that it doesn't. It just took one very determined mother, a deep love of nature, and the science of biomimicry to prove it.

Lea-Anne Crawford — Founder

Lea-Anne Crawford has always been precise about what goes on her family's skin. A lifelong lover of nature and science — she holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement — she was never going to accept conventional pesticide-based outdoor protection as the only option available to her children.

It was her second child's persistent skin sensitivity in the early 2000s that set everything in motion. Lea-Anne turned to books on essential oils and botanical formulation, teaching herself to create natural remedies at night while her children slept. Long before clean beauty became a cultural conversation, she was already formulating everything from toothpaste to body treatments from scratch.

The breakthrough came when her research led her to biomimicry — the science of working with nature's own mechanisms rather than against them. She discovered that nature's uninvited guests navigate primarily by scent, detecting the carboxylic acids in human skin that signal a warm-blooded host is nearby. The answer wasn't chemical force. It was botanical intelligence. A precise blend of pure vanilla and spearmint essential oils — the Vanilla Mozi Proprietary Blend — that interacts with those acids at a molecular level, creating a beautiful botanical veil. Nature's uninvited guests don't interpret you as a food source. They don't interpret you at all.

Vanilla Mozi launched in 2005. Lea-Anne's first customers were the parents at her children's school drop-off. Word spread quickly, local markets followed, and a loyal community began to form around something that had never existed before. Today, Lea-Anne lives on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, with her husband. Her four children have grown up surrounded by the product she created for them — and she has just welcomed her first grandchild into the world. The founding belief that drove everything has never changed.

Krista Fergusson — Partner & Manager

Krista Fergusson came to Vanilla Mozi the way the best things often happen — through a long friendship, a shared love of the outdoors, and a lifelong personal need for the product.

With nearly thirty years in the film and television industry — having founded and run several large production companies throughout her career — Krista has spent her life telling stories in nature. She has also spent most of that career as a self-confessed magnet for nature's uninvited guests. Long days on location in the Australian bush have a way of making you very particular about what goes on your skin. And Krista has always been particular — a lover of premium quality skincare who refuses to compromise on what she applies to her body.

When her close friend Lea-Anne introduced her to Vanilla Mozi, the response was immediate. Here was a product that was genuinely beautiful to use, scientifically grounded, and actually worked. Krista joined the brand in 2022 and the organisational discipline and operational rigour that running large film productions demands has proven invaluable in scaling Vanilla Mozi with care and intention. Charlie joined alongside her, lending his creative direction to the brand's visual identity and growth. Together they are helping to take what Lea-Anne built in Australia to families around the world.
